Well the major works are finished and the loo is now all working. Still to do is some tiling and decoration which will happen sometime next week. This weekend we will be having a big clean up around the house now all the dust has settled!
The small alcove to the right of the door will have some shelves added to it for storage of small items, towels, soap etc. We also have a mirrored corner cupboard and a towel rail to go up.

Well the work has carried on this week. Plaster boarding is now complete and all the electrics are in. The next stage is the taping and filling of the joints. Once that is done the sink and loo will be installed. Then the room will need painting and a few finishing touches applied such as door handles!

Work has been taking place this week to build our additional loo down in the basement. We discovered last year that there is a mains drainage connection there, so adding a loo in a corner of the basement we thought should prove to be fairly straight forward.
The new loo is virtually next door to our downstairs office so it will be less of a chore to go to the loo at the other end of the house when you are downstairs. We have also made the loo a reasonable size room so anyone staying and sleeping downstairs, could use the loo as a changing room. Additionally we have added a door to separate off the wine cellar, hopefully this will keep this room a bit cooler than it has been.
So this is the area of the basement as it was in Summer 2009.

Still some work to do inside, but it’s coming along nicely.

We have had George our family cat since about April 2003. We think he was about 2-3 years old when we got him from the Cats Protection people in Tunbridge Wells. Naturally he is like a lot of older cats he lazy’s around most of the day and demands food as soon as you wake up and from about 5pm onwards!
Unfortunately George is diabetic, so his feeding and insulin injections have to be regulated and controlled each day. But he has got used to it now and we don’t find it too much of a chore.
He is a very timid cat and doesn’t get on very well with other cats, but he is very affectionate… more so when he’s hungry I wonder why!
Our move here had to include George and moving him was part of our grand plan. We altered our normal route via Newhaven<>Dieppe to go via the Channel Tunnel so that we would be with George the whole journey. Otherwise George would have been left on his own in the car for the channel crossing which would have been for about 4-5 hours. A complete none starter really.
In the end we went via the Channel Tunnel, George travelled in a medium size dog cage, which allowed him to move around and sleep if he wanted to. In the end I don’t think he slept much on the journey here, although quite a bit of the journey was in the dark and when we got here he was let free in to the kitchen.
Since our arrival he has been kept indoors for five weeks and as you can see in the picture above he has settled in quite well!! This week we took the brave step of taking him outside to show him around the garden, we did this a couple of times. The second time he bolted out of my arms but ran straight back in to the house again… good sign we thought.
We then started to leave the door open at the front of the house about an hour before he would normally be fed, he ventured out on to the veranda a couple of times. Then yesterday he managed to escape via the kitchen window after eating but before he had had his morning jab. Anyway we got him back in again and then let him out again. He came in when he was hungry, but we think he spent most of the day curled up inside the laurel hedge! I guess it must be slightly cooler in there. It is certainly too hot for him to lay out in the sun here at the moment.
Today we have brought a cat flap similar to the one we had in UK, so once we have fitted it in the side panel of the French windows and once he’s been trained to come in and out that way he will be able to get in and out of the house easier.

Well we have now been here a month. It doesn’t seem like it, the time has flown by. Although I guess that’s because we have been keeping ourselves busy.
For the last three weeks or so we have been gradually unpacking, which as yet we haven’t finished, but we are making good progress. We have had a few minor difficulties due to having too many things!!
Well merging two households this is bound to happen. So we are doing the equivalent of a car boot fair in a weeks time to see if we can get rid of some of our unwanted items. For instance I don’t need two suits, both with two pairs of trousers! One suit is hardly going to get warn out here!! I also had quite a lot of clothes here as well as in UK so finding space for all of our clothes has proved interesting!! One of my jobs last week was to convert the wardrobe in to having two rails rather than one. It has worked out quite well. But I still need to sort through my shirts. We have also made some changes in the kitchen to increase the storage capacity in the cupboards. We are just about ahead of the game now.
But it’s not all been work and no play. I’ve enjoyed getting my own desk back again and getting set up with all our computer stuff in the basement office which is working well. I don’t think it will need much heating in the winter, the walls and ceiling are all well insulated and with all the PC stuff running it is quite cosy in there!
We have both been adapting to a different style of life out here. Our waking hours are definitely more relaxed, no alarms to wake us up unless we have an early morning appointment to get to, which is rare!
George the cat has settled in well, although he’s not quite plucked up the courage to venture outside yet, even if we leave the door open. He seems more than happy to sleep on one of the dining chairs or on our bed or hide under one of the beds in amongst all the linen bags.
This weekend on Sunday is the Pique-nique du quartier, sort of a gathering of all of our neighbours in the 30 or so houses in our small estate. We have attended most of the previous ones and you can see pictures of the events at our sister site Criox de Chambre I will take some photographs of the event for the site.
I’ve also revamped/built a new website for our property business LTPS. Work on this new site is more or less finished although I might add some different photographs to the site to change it about a bit.
We have quite a lot happening over the next few weeks so I will update the blog soon.
